World IN BRIEF : MEXICO : Unleaded Gas to Be Sold to Reduce Smog

About 1,300 service stations throughout Mexico for the first time are being equipped to sell unleaded gasoline in an effort to cut down on smog levels, especially in pollution-plagued Mexico City, the state petroleum monopoly said. Pemex, formally known as Petroleos Mexicanos S.A., said the new type of gasoline will be available to motorists in about three weeks. Gas stations selling the unleaded gas will be located every 100 miles or so along Mexico’s principal highways. Under a new law, all Mexican-made 1991-model vehicles must be equipped with catalytic converters, which only work with unleaded gas.
