COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Northern Arizona Trounces Bumbling CS Northridge, 37-3
John Bonds passed for four touchdowns and ran for another as Northern Arizona defeated turnover-plagued Cal State Northridge, 37-3, Saturday in the season opener for both teams at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Bonds, a transfer from Arizona State, completed 12 of 27 passes for 292 yards and his touchdown pass plays of 76, 10, 63 and 41 yards. He had one pass intercepted.
Northridge, which scored first on a 42-yard field goal by Abo Velasco in the first quarter, gained 270 yards in offense. However, the Matadors committed five turnovers.
Northridge tailback Albert Fann rushed for only 45 yards in 17 carries and quarterback Marty Fisher, subbing for starter Sherdrick Bonner, completed 17 of 31 passes for 180 yards with two interceptions in the first extended appearance of his collegiate career.
Fisher, a sophomore, entered the game early in the second quarter when Bonner twisted his right ankle.
