A Danish woman was killed and 11 other people were injured in a three-car accident on Interstate 5 near La Costa, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Rita Korfgaard, 40, of Denmark, was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said. The 11 others were being treated at hospitals for a range of injuries, the spokeswoman said.

The crash occurred about 5 a.m. Sunday in the northbound lane of I-5 south of La Costa when a car struck a divider, spun across the other northbound lanes and caused a collision with two more cars, the spokeswoman said.
