Pomona : Bid to Save the Mighty Oak
Concerned by reports that a developer has started chopping down a 200-year-old Southern California live oak tree, the City Council on Tuesday imposed a 30-day moratorium on the destruction of such trees.
The moratorium will give city staff members time to prepare an ordinance regulating tree removal. One resident told the council that the buyer of a lot in Ganesha Hills removed 15 to 20 trees and was chopping at a 200-year-old oak when he stopped work after complaints from the former owner of the property and from neighbors.
Douglas Bridges, city parks and recreation director, said the city will develop an ordinance requiring builders to consult with the city before removing valuable trees.
The developer was not identified.
