Millie, President and Mrs. Bush’s English springer spaniel, is suffering from lupus, a degenerative disease, the First Lady’s spokeswoman said today.

Millie, whose life story has been recorded in a book titled “Millie’s Book as Dictated to Barbara Bush,” soon to be published, has been ailing all summer and diagnosed in varying ways.

White House aides earlier said that Millie was afflicted with lead poisoning after licking paint chipped away from the exterior of the White House in a two-year renovation project.

But now, Anna Perez, the First Lady’s press secretary, said she is being treated for lupus, an unusual disease for canines.

The symptoms most commonly associated with the ailment are arthritis and changes in the skin and internal organs.
