Hugo Allan Garcia, who competed for Guatemala in the World Track and Field championships in 1987, has enrolled at Glendale College and will compete on the school’s cross-country and track teams, according to Glendale Coach Ed Lopez.

Garcia, 26, failed to advance to the 5,000-meter final in Rome but posted a personal best of 14 minutes 8.72 seconds in placing 15th in his semifinal heat.

“There’s no question he’ll be our No. 1 man (in cross-country),” Lopez said. “I think that he should be one of the contenders for the state title. He’s in about 14:30 shape right now, but he has a chance to break the 5,000 record during track.”
