CAMARILLO : FAA to Help Finance New Runway Lights

Share

The Federal Aviation Administration has agreed to help replace the Camarillo Airport’s runway lights after the system was deemed inadequate in a recent inspection, county airport officials said.

Under an agreement with the Ventura County Aviation Advisory Commission, the FAA would pay $595,000 of the lighting improvement costs.

The remaining $70,000 would come from the county airport budget.

The commission voted Thursday night to accept the grant along with another FAA grant for Oxnard Airport projects.

Charles McCormick, an FAA electrical engineer, notified airport officials of several problems with the Camarillo Airport’s runway lighting after an inspection in May, said Barbara Sominsky, assistant to Airports Administrator James G. O’Neill.

To fix the problems, the airport’s high-intensity runway lights would be replaced by more moderate lights, Sominsky said.

An emergency generator, new transformers and other runway identification lights would be installed, she said.

The FAA has agreed to provide $208,000 of an estimated $230,000 needed to construct two helicopter pads and to improve service roads at Oxnard Airport.
