West Los Angeles College snapped its 21-game losing streak with a come-from-behind victory over Chaffey College on Saturday, 28-22, in a successful debut for Coach Robert Hager.

WLAC quarterback Chris McCloud didn’t do much passing (3 for 9, 41 yards), but he and running backs Myron Phillips and Cary Tiller led a running attack that enabled the Oilers to overcome a 14-7 halftime deficit. McCloud had 22 carries for 80 yards and scored three touchdowns on short runs, Phillips had 10 carries for 87 yards and Tiller had 18 carries for 65 yards and scored on a one-yard run.

Oiler defensive lineman Sam Rogers, who played last year for Hager at West Hills College in Coalinga, had four sacks.

Hager said he doesn’t think his team was affected by the losing streak. “We were more bothered by youth and inexperience,” he said, particularly when Chaffey scored on the last play of the game. “That was a sign of an area we really need to grow in. (However) our players showed a lot of character by relaxing and coming from behind.”

West Los Angeles has a bye this week.
