Meadow Star passed her first test. Now, the 2-year-old filly must pass another.

So far, she’s been a straight-A student. She broke her maiden June 13 and since has won three straight stakes. Sunday, in the $100,000-added Grade I Matron at Belmont, she takes on a field of five other 2-year-old fillies at seven furlongs, one-eighth of a mile longer than any of her previous starts.

“She always showed a great deal of ability, but it’s one of those things--you never know until they run with good horses,” trainer Leroy Jolley said.

Not only is Meadow Star undefeated, but she has won going away in each race. For that reason, Jolley doesn’t expect any trouble with the longer distance.

“She has handled everything well to now, and it doesn’t appear the distance would be a factor,” he said. “But you never know. She’s by a first-year stud, and we don’t have a lot of experience with him or his offspring, so we’re going in the dark.”

Meadow Star’s staunchest competition might come from Carl Icahn-owned stablemate Really Quick, a Florida-bred stakes winner.

Also in the field are Prayerful Miss, Clark Cottage, Makin Faces and Verbasle. Meadow Star will be ridden by Jose Santos, Really Quick by Mike Smith. All will carry 119 pounds.
