In a White House ceremony Monday, President Bush congratulated officials of a Chatsworth private elementary school cited for excellence this year by the U.S. Department of Education.
The Sierra Canyon School was one of 221 public and private schools to be named a Recognized School of Excellence and the only for-profit school cited, federal education officials said. The 12-year-old school is one of 16 in California honored and the only school in Los Angeles to be honored.
“We are proud to be recognized as one of America’s finest schools,” Principal Ann Gillinger said.
The 400-student school was selected based on the academic performance of its students, parent involvement and teaching programs, Department of Education officials said. Sierra Canyon officials were notified of the award in May.
The school, which charges $5,700 annual tuition, offers small classes and foreign language instruction as part of its regular curriculum. Sierra Canyon School has an amphitheater, two swimming pools and is next to 36 acres of open space where students take nature walks and study plants and insects.
