COLLEGE FOOTBALL REPORT : WEEKDAY UPDATE : SAN DIEGO STATE : Aztecs Make a Switch at Strong Safety

Share

The Aztecs will face Ty Detmer and Brigham Young Saturday in Provo, Utah with a new strong safety. Coach Al Luginbill said either David Cooper or Chris Johnson will start in place of Morey Paul.

Paul, a senior, had started both of SDSU’s games this season and 10 of 12 last season. Luginbill said he will be moved to nickelback, where he will back up Derrick Williams.

During his career at SDSU, Paul (6-feet-2, 205 pounds) has played inside linebacker, outside linebacker, strong safety, free safety and, now, nickelback.

Cooper (6-1, 195) is a senior; Johnson (6-0, 190) is a redshirt freshman. Cooper said he learned of the position changes before practice Tuesday.

“It’s about time I get a chance,” he said. “It’s all up to me now.”

Luginbill said he will make the decision as to who will start toward the end of the week.

Senior offensive lineman Nick Subis (6-6, 285) is disappointed. A ballet class he signed up for was canceled because of low enrollment. “I’m kind of bummed,” he said. Subis signed up for the class because he needed it for his physical education major. He could have taken any number of other dance classes--ballroom, modern--but picked ballet. There was a definite reason in mind. “I thought ballet would be best for me to work on my flexibility and balance,” he said. . . . Injury report: Running back Tommy Booker, still suffering from a sprained ankle, has the stomach flu and is doubtful for Saturday’s game. Linebacker Jamal Duff (bruised thigh) is out. BYU reports no significant injuries.
