Randy Shields of North Hollywood, a welterweight contender in the late 1970s and early 1980s, will return to the ring Tuesday night in a scheduled 10-round junior middleweight bout against Stewart Baynes of Los Angeles at the Country Club in Reseda .

Shields, 34, has not fought since February, 1983, when he was beaten by former welterweight champion Johnny Bumphus.

He fought five other world champions or former world champions--Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Wilfredo Benitez, Pipino Cuevas and Milton McCrory--but lost all of those fights. His loss to Leonard came on a close but unanimous decision, as did his loss to welterweight champion Cuevas.

Baynes is 9-11 and has lost three of his past six fights.

Shields was granted a California boxing license last week after his sparring session was observed by an official of the State Athletic Commission.

Cal Lutheran’s starting wide receivers have been moved to quarterback, offensive coordinator Ron Veres said Tuesday.

Either split end Tom Leogrande or flanker Cassidy O’Sullivan will replace freshman quarterback Feliciano Ramirez, who struggled in Cal Lutheran’s first two games. Veres said a starter will be selected today or Thursday.

“Between me and Cassidy, we’ll do fine,” Leogrande said.

Jody Robinson, 36, has been hired as an assistant baseball coach at Cal State Northridge.

Robinson, an assistant at Illinois for the past three seasons, replaces Dave Weatherman, who resigned in August for personal reasons.

Robinson will be reunited with Northridge Coach Bill Kernen, an assistant at Cal State Fullerton from 1978-80 and in 1987. Robinson was a Titan assistant from 1978-81.

“We coached alongside each other for three seasons,” Kernen said. “So I know what he’s capable of. He’s one of the top coaches in college baseball today, assistant or otherwise. . . . I consider this a very big catch for our program. Jody’s hiring is more important that any recruit I’ve signed because he will have an effect on all our players.”

Before his stint at Illinois, Robinson was an assistant at Cerritos College from 1984-87, when the Falcons won two state titles and compiled a 109-24 record.

Robinson, a 1978 graduate of Cal State Fullerton, played for the Titans in 1975 and ’76.
