ORANGE — A newborn girl found dead in a restroom at UCI Medical Center last week died of asphyxiation as the result of an accident, hospital officials said Wednesday.
The baby’s teen-age mother, who is under treatment at the hospital’s psychiatric facility, is not expected to face criminal charges, officials said in a prepared statement.
“After a joint review of the case by the Orange County district attorney’s office and the University of California Police, authorities have decided that it was an accidental death and they anticipate no criminal charges will be filed,” the statement said.
A coroner’s spokesman said further tests would be conducted to determine how the infant was asphyxiated.
The baby was discovered in a restroom near the hospital’s emergency room Sept. 13 by a janitor.
