Roger Clemens, sidelined since Sept. 4 because of tendinitis in his right shoulder, was given medical clearance Thursday to rejoin the Boston Red Sox.

Arthur Pappas, the team physician and an orthopedic specialist, said “(Clemens) is ready to pitch” after missing three starts.

The Red Sox said Clemens will pitch Sunday against the New York Yankees.

Manager Joe Morgan also has Clemens penciled in to start against the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series in Boston on Sept. 28.

If the AL East race between Toronto and Boston goes down to the final day, Clemens would be rested to pitch against the Chicago White Sox in the final regular-season game Oct. 3.

If Boston has clinched the division title before Oct. 3, Clemens would pitch the opening game of the American League Championship Series Oct. 6.

Clemens, 20-6 with a league-leading 1.98 earned-run average, suffered severe pain and swelling as his eight-game winning streak was ended by the Oakland Athletics on Sept. 4.
