The start of Thursday night’s Canadian Football League game between the Toronto Argonauts and Calgary Stampeders was delayed because of a dispute over field conditions at the SkyDome in Toronto.
The Argonauts won the game, 70-18.
Officials for both teams and the CFL engaged in a verbal tug-of-war with SkyDome management for 20 minutes past the scheduled start. Commissioner Donald Crump decided to let the game go on, but not before getting assurances from SkyDome officials that the facility would be liable in case of an injury.
“We were within about two minutes of calling this thing off,” said an angry Mike McCarthy, general manager of the Argos.
The concern centered on the baseball infield used by the Toronto Blue Jays. The artificial turf that covers the pitcher’s mound and bases formed humps at the south end of the football field.
SkyDome president Richard Peddie deemed the field safe, despite the uneven sections.
There were no injuries in the game.
