THE SIDELINES : Regents OK Coors Arena Name
In exchange for a $5-million contribution from the Adolph Coors Foundation, the University of Colorado Board of Regents voted Thursday to attach the familiar Coors moniker to the school’s Events-Conference Center, home of the school’s basketball team.
The regents voted 6 to 2 to rename the arena the Coors Events Center, despite an impassioned plea from a student representative concerned about the perceived association with alcohol.
“The name Coors is not just a family name--it’s the name of a beer,” said Julie O’Brian, chairwoman of the inter-campus student forum and a student union official. “You know as well as I do that alcohol is a scourge on this campus. I ask you, on this vote, not to turn your backs on the students.”
