Troy Passes With the Greatest of Ease, Defeats Brea

Brea-Olinda High School’s pass defenders knew what was coming all along.

Stopping it was another matter, however.

Friday night, Brea’s defense faced visiting Troy (2-1) and its pass-happy attack. And Greg Windle, Troy’s gifted quarterback, gained 343 yards in the air in a 26-16 Troy victory at Wildcat Stadium.

Windle’s favorite target was all-Freeway League split end Steve Friedrich.

“All night long, I could hear the defenders yelling, ‘Watch No. 9! (Friedrich’s number)’ ” Friedrich said. “But for some reason, I was open all the time anyway.”

And Windle delivered. He attempted 40 passes and completed 24--nine to Friedrich for 93 yards. The duo hooked up on a pair of touchdowns.

With 39 seconds left in the first half, Windle rolled to his left and hit Friedrich for a 25-yard touchdown play. That score erased a 10-7 Brea lead, which had came on Marco Hernandez’s 38-yard field goal.

Windle hit Friedrich on the left side from the 12 for another touchdown on Troy’s second possession of the second half.

“It was just like playing catch,” said Friedrich, who is also the catcher for Troy’s baseball team.

Windle added a third touchdown pass when he hit wide open tight end Jim Falletta with a 37-yard strike in the fourth quarter.

Brea (2-1) got its first touchdown in the second when Jason Luevanos threw to Jamie Baraglia for a 41-yard score.
