In its first two games, Oklahoma proved that it could run over opponents.

The Sooners, however, were looking to show that they could also pass when they played Tulsa Saturday at Norman, Okla.

It did not take long for Oklahoma (3-0) to make its point. Steve Collins threw two touchdown passes in less than a minute in the first quarter and the No. 11 Sooners rolled to a 52-10 victory.

Collins completed eight of 19 passes for 165 yards before sitting down midway through the third quarter. Backup Cale Gundy completed four of six passes for 37 yards. The 25 passes were six short of an Oklahoma record set in 1938.

Collins threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Artie Guess to cap the Sooners’ first possession, then found Guess on a 19-yard scoring play less than a minute later. It was the first time Oklahoma’s first two possessions ended with touchdown passes since Dec. 2, 1972 against Oklahoma State.

Guess became the first Sooner since Billy Brooks in 1974 to catch two touchdown passes in a game.

Tulsa (1-3) gave the Sooners a tougher time than many expected, but the Hurricane couldn’t prevent big pass plays.

Northern Illinois 42, Kansas State 35--Quarterback Stacey Robinson ran for three touchdowns, including the game-winner with 40 seconds left, and threw two touchdown passes to lead the Huskies (2-2) over the Wildcats (2-1) at DeKalb, Ill.

Robinson’s nine-yard touchdown run climaxed a 21-point comeback by the Huskies in the fourth quarter.

Adam Dach gained 128 yards in 14 carries for Northern Illinois.

Kansas State quarterback Carl Straw completed 27 of 36 passes for 327 yards. Michael Smith caught eight passes for 136 yards for the Wildcats.
