Mississippi defensive back Chris Mitchell was dazed when he heard.

His tackle on running back Ron Dickerson at the Rebels’ one-yard line on the final play of the game preserved Mississippi’s 21-17 victory over 13th-ranked Arkansas on Saturday.

The play started at the Mississippi five-yard line with 12 seconds remaining and Arkansas (1-1) out of timeouts. Quinn Grovey headed left and pitched to Dickerson, who was hit low by Chauncey Godwin. Dickerson lunged for the end zone when Mitchell sent him spinning.

“That running back had that look in his eye, but I knew if we could slow him down someone could tackle him,” Godwin said. “I didn’t see Chris make the hit, but I sure heard it.”

Said Dickerson: “I heard some guy say it was over and a ref say no touchdown. I really didn’t know what had happened. Everything was in slow motion. It was like I could feel the seconds ticking off the clock.”

Earl Thomas ran 13 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, and Vincent Brownlee produced two long-range scores for Mississippi (2-1), which came from behind twice.

Brownlee’s 25-yard catch of a Tom Luke pass and his 89-yard punt return during a 2 1/2-minute span in the second quarter put the Rebels in front, 14-6. After Arkansas went ahead, 17-14, Thomas scored to put the Rebels ahead to stay with 13:45 left in the game.

Grovey, stifled much of the time by the Mississippi defense, ad-libbed an 11-yard touchdown run that gave Arkansas a 15-14 lead, and his two-point conversion extended the lead to three.

Arkansas started its final possession at its 36 with 59 seconds remaining, with Grovey completions of 34 and 13 yards to Derek Russell the big plays. Grovey’s seven-yard pass to Dickerson got a first down at the Ole Miss five.
