BIG WEST ROUNDUP : Canley Rushes for 253 Yards as San Jose State Routs UNLV

San Jose State’s Sheldon Canley ran for a school-record 253 yards and three touchdowns in 43 carries to lead the Spartans to a 47-13 Big West Conference victory over Nevada Las Vegas Saturday night at Las Vegas.

Canley broke the record of 228 yards set by Johnny Johnson Jr. against Utah State in 1988. Johnson is now with the Phoenix Cardinals.

Canley’s final touchdown, on a seven-yard run, started a barrage of four touchdowns in the final 7:26 for the Spartans (2-1-1, 2-0)

The Rebels are 1-3 and 0-1.

San Jose’s Ralph Martini completed 17 of 34 passes for 173 yards, and the Spartans had 510 yards in total offense. They held the Rebels to 138, including 12 yards rushing.

Fresno State 42, New Mexico State 3--Fullback Lorenzo Neal rushed for a career-high 102 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Fresno State in the Big West opener for both teams at Fresno.

The loss extended New Mexico State’s nation-leading losing streak to 21 games. Fresno, 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference, has won 22 of its last 23 games.

New Mexico State fell to 0-4, 0-1.

Aaron Craver, who scored on a seven-yard run in the second quarter, scored on a one-yard run in the third quarter.

Fresno added two more touchdowns in the final quarter on a one-yard run by Neal and a seven-yard run by James Allison.

Fresno quarterback Mark Barsotti completed 14 of 32 passes for 174 yards.
