‘Civil War’ Top Opener for PBS

The two-hour opening episode of PBS’ monumental documentary “The Civil War” scored the network’s highest rating ever for the debut of any series, according to data provided Monday by the A.C. Nielsen Co. and PBS.

Based on ratings for Nielsen’s 24 largest markets, PBS estimated that nearly 14 million people nationwide watched the opening installment of filmmaker Ken Burns’ nine-part series. In Los Angeles, 11% of all television sets in use at the time or more than 370,000 households were tuned in.

The show scored a 9 rating and 13% audience share in the 24 markets. CBS won the period with a 16.6 rating and 25 share.

“The Civil War” continues through Thursday. KCET Channel 28 will repeat the entire series Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
