Share

If you’re looking for San Diego State among the NCAA Division I defensive statistics, you better start at the bottom of the list.

The Aztecs (1-2 overall, 0-1 in the Western Athletic Conference) are ranked 106th in the country (read: last) in both total defense (509.7 yards allowed a game) and scoring defense (41.3 points a game).

As for pass defense, SDSU is 102nd. SDSU has allowed a pass efficiency rating of 152.3. The average is about 100.

“If we’re there at the end of the year, then we’ve got something to be worried about,” SDSU Coach Al Luginbill said.

In three games, SDSU has yet to make an interception. Opponents are averaging seven yards per play, nine yards per pass attempt and 16 yards per completion. In three games, opponents have had 25 plays on which they have gained 20 or more yards.

The good news for SDSU is that Air Force arrives in town Saturday with its wishbone running attack. The Aztec run defense (101.3) is 21st in the country.

Air Force Coach Fisher DeBerry said he doesn’t anticipate first-team quarterback Ron Gray (knee) will play when the Falcons (2-2, 1-2) meet SDSU Saturday at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium at 6:05 p.m. Sophomore Jarvis Baker will start instead. Baker completed two of seven passes for 43 yards and one interception in Saturday’s 24-12 loss to Wyoming. Gray injured an anterior cruciate ligament during warm-ups. . . . SDSU injury update: The follow-up X-rays on running back Curtis Butts (neck sprain/strain) were negative, and SDSU trainer Brian Barry lists him as questionable for Saturday’s game.
