Variety Spices Catch for Anglers at Pyramid

Fishermen who want variety should try Pyramid Lake.
Most species are active in this Los Angeles County reservoir, according to a spokeswoman who offered these catches as proof: a 17 1/2-pound catfish, caught by Bill Guffey of Canyon Country; a seven-pound largemouth bass caught by Gary Harrison of Castaic; an 18-pound striped bass caught by Mike Frazier of Burbank, and two bluegills at a pound apiece caught by Leonard Lunurd of Fullerton.
PUDDINGSTONE RESERVOIR--Largemouth bass fair along shoreline. Black plastics working best. Bill Acres, Chino, 7-pound bass caught at north shore. Red ear perch and bluegills good throughout lake. Meal worms and bobber best bet. Catfish active in evenings, biting on mackerel. Team bass tournament Oct. 20, (714) 599-8411.
LAKE PERRIS--Largemouth bass active near rangers’ tower and waterslide, averaging two pounds, biting mostly on plastics. Bluegill active in early mornings and evenings, mostly near marina and piers 1 & 2. Crickets and meal worms working best. Catfish fair, most caught at buoy line and east road bed.
IRVINE LAKE--Catfish providing most action. Boat docks and flats best area. Mackerel, chicken livers and nightcrawlers all working. Bob Iverson, Westminster, 13-7 catfish. Harold and Lulu Fuller, Venice, 10 catfish, 49 pounds, caught during day in flats. Largemouth bass picking up, biting on surface in early mornings and evenings. Bluegill and red ear perch active at flats.
BIG BEAR LAKE--Trout between 10-15 inches being taken from dam to Gray’s Landing. Boaters fishing from Rock Wall to Zebra Room. Power Bait best bet. Trollers catching some fish with needlefish, Rapala lures and small spinners. Largemouth bass slow. Catfish between two-four pounds biting mainly at east end near weeds. Crappie active in all bays, biting on meal worms and mini-jigs.
LAKE SILVERWOOD--Stripers active through channel, hitting surface lures in morning, anchovies during day. Fisherman with Max’s Guide Service, six stripers, largest 30 pounds, all but one released. Butch Augustine, Fontana, 28-pound striper. Crappie biting in marina, channel and Outhouse Cove. Catfish most active in Outhouse Cove, dam and Cleghorn Canyon. Note: A fishing clinic will be held by Del East Sat. at 1 p.m. in the marina area. No cost. Information: (619) 389-2303.
LAKE CASITAS--Largemouth bass picking up. Crank baits at 10-20 feet best bet. Bill Roskilly, Sunland, 12 1/2-pound bass, released. Steve Pooley, Oak View, 6 1/2-pound bass. Catfish fair, biting in shallows, best near small island or back of main island. George Collier, Oxnard, eight catfish, 45 pounds. Mackerel best bet. Trout moving toward surface, biting near dam at 20 feet.
PYRAMID LAKE--Most species active, especially catfish, biting throughout lake. Bill Guffey, Canyon Country, 17 1/2-pound catfish, caught at Lost Mine. Greg Burnett, San Bernardino, five catfish, largest 9 1/2 pounds. Largemouth most active near dam. Gary Harrison, Castaic, 7-pound bass, caught on spinner. Bluegill biting throughout lake. Vince Harris, Castaic, two bluegill, two pounds. Leonard Lunurd, Fullerton, two bluegill, two pounds. Striped bass scattered along shoreline and dam. Mike Frazier, Burbank, 18-0 striper, caught on Krocodile lure in marina.
LAKE PIRU--Trout picking up, 4,000 planted Tuesday. Gold lures working best. Some limits taken. Catfish best at north end. Dan Vercoutere, Burbank, 23-0 catfish. Largemouth bass fair, fish averaging two pounds, biting mainly on crank baits in mornings.
LAKE CASTAIC--Catfish providing most action, biting in both lakes. Largemouth bass fair in upper lake. Jack O’Malley and Gary Harrison, Canoga Park, seven bass, 20 pounds. Bluegill fairly active in upper lake near brush. Other species slow.
SAN DIEGO LAKES--El Capitan: Lots of sublegal bass (less than 15 inches). Channel catfish and sunfish active. Fred Gorman, El Cajon, 11 1/2-pound blue catfish, caught on mackerel. Hodges: Fair reports on bass and catfish. Scattered crappie catches. Mini jigs best bet. Casey Jones, Los Angeles, eight crappie, 13-8, largest 2-12. Catfish bite good. Kevin Guthrie, Rob Wagner, Mike Gilbert, Oceanside, 30 channel catfish, 63 pounds, largest 8-8. Miramar: Largemouth bass unusually active. Tule line shiners. Otay: Largemouth bass slow. Bluegill providing most action. San Vicente: Producing large bass, bluegill and catfish. Phil Gant and John White, San Diego, 10 catfish, 64-1, largest 11-2. Tom Gayan, Santee, 9-0 bass, caught on crawfish. Closures: Otay, sunset Oct. 7; San Vicente, sunset Oct. 14.
BISHOP AREA--Pleasant Valley Reservoir: Trout biting on small spinners and bubble-and-fly (mosquito patterns). Best in evening. South Lake: Boat rentals closed for remainder of season. Shore fishermen using pink Power Bait near surface catching most fish. Sabrina: Boats available through Oct. 31. Limits of pan-sized rainbows fairly common. Same at South Lake.
MAMMOTH--Regular plants at Lakes Mary, Mamie and George making for steady fishing. Weather cold, but fishing good. Power Bait and worms, fished near surface, most productive. Brown trout active on the lower Owens River. Crowley: Mostly rainbows to 13 inches, but fish running to 22 inches. Green Banks area most productive.
CONVICT LAKE--DFG planting half-pound trout; private hatchery adding four- to six-pounders to make for excellent fishing. Worms and nightcrawlers producing best results. Trollers also doing well.
JUNE LOOP--June, Gull and Silver Lakes report good fishing, with brooders in four- to five-pound range stocked at all three. Power Bait, worms and lures working.
BRIDGEPORT--Virginia and Twin Lakes being stocked with brooders from two to eight pounds. Wobbling spoons in fluorescent colors best bet. Fly fishermen enjoying excellent fishing in West Walker River. Trout to 19 inches. Water level low; light rods and grasshopper patterns best bet.
LAKE MEAD--Striped bass active on surface in lower basin, biting on anchovies and surface lures. Larger fish not as active, biting at 40 feet on anchovies. Catfish small but active, most under two pounds. Largemouth bass slow, but some stripers being taken on surface.
LAKE HAVASU--Striped bass sporadically active on surface, otherwise at 35-40 feet on anchovies. Catfish biting in deep water, averaging three to five pounds. Largemouth bass slow, best in mornings and evenings on surface. Medium-running lures and plastics working best during day.
