Paramount running back Leon Neal did not score a touchdown Friday night, but his 177 yards rushing was a key to the Pirates’ 20-0 victory over Dominguez in Compton.

Paramount (4-0), the two-time defending Southern Section Division III champion, capitalized on six turnovers by Dominguez to win its 11th consecutive game.

Neal, a 5-foot-9 senior, was nearly unstoppable in the first half, rushing for 154 yards in 14 carries, as Paramount took a 14-0 lead.

After a scoreless first quarter, Paramount scored its first touchdown on a nine-play, 80-yard drive with Rolando Avila scoring on a one-yard run. Neal was instrumental on the drive, rushing for 63 yards in three carries.

Paramount made it 14-0 late in the second quarter after a muffed punt by Dominguez’s Lavell Townsend. The Pirates needed only three plays to go 13 yards with Demondre White scoring from seven yards out.

Neal was held to 22 yards in seven carries in the second half, but four turnovers by Dominguez were too much to overcome.

Paramount scored its final touchdown on a nine-yard run by White after Townsend fumbled his second punt of the game with 3:11 left in the third quarter. The Pirates needed only four plays to go 31 yards for the score.

“I feel that we dominated them on both offense and defense, but they hurt themselves with turnovers,” Neal said. “It was a big game for us and we had to gain respect from them on the field.”

Dominguez senior quarterback Anthony Young, who missed the Dons’ previous two games due to a knee injury, was ineffective against Paramount’s defense. Young completed three of five passes for 22 yards and his two incompletions were intercepted.

Dominguez (3-1) was held to four first downs by Paramount’s stingy defense, led by linebacker Sam Santana. Twice Dominguez moved inside Paramount’s 20 and came away without a point.

“I said all along that we’re not that good because we start so many young kids,” said Dominguez Coach Willie Donerson, who has only three senior starters on defense. “We just ran into a much better team and mistakes will hurt you.”
