San Marcos 22, Rio Mesa 20--Junior Huy Trinh rushed for 131 yards in 21 carries, including an 11-yard run for the winning touchdown with 6:45 left as San Marcos (1-3, 1-0) held off the Spartans (2-2, 0-1) at Rio Mesa.

Trinh, a reserve tailback, was forced into action in the second half when starter Ed Gallegos left because of an injury. Gallegos, also a junior, carried 20 times for 119 yards, all in the first half.

In the third quarter, quarterback Angel Lopez scored from one yard and running back Sal Balsano scored the two-point conversion to give Rio Mesa a 14-13 lead. But San Marcos answered with a field goal and Trinh’s touchdown run in the final quarter.

Lopez completed four of nine for 52 yards and scored two touchdowns. Balsano carried 12 times for 97 yards and one touchdown to lead Spartan rushers.

San Marcos quarterback David Lopez completed six of 13 for 73 yards and two touchdowns.
