Good teams have to win on bad days, which is what sixth-ranked Michigan did Saturday at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Jon Vaughn, held far under his nation-leading rushing average, scored two touchdowns and the Michigan defense had three sacks and recovered three fumbles in a 45-17 nonconference victory over Maryland.

“I’m happy we won but not pleased by the way we played,” Michigan Coach Gary Moeller said. “Any win is a good win. Maybe it will help our focus.”

The Wolverines lost three of four fumbles and gave up an interception. Maryland, which outgained Michigan 422 yards to 352, lost all three of its fumbles and gave up three interceptions.

The sixth-ranked Wolverines (2-1) scored on three of the six turnovers by Maryland (3-2).

Vaughn, averaging 244.5 yards a game, was held to 89 yards in 22 carries by the Terrapins, who had allowed no previous opponent to score more than 18 points.

“I’m happy with all my games no matter how many yards I get,” Vaughn said. “As long as we win, 80 yards is good enough for me. You can’t get 200 yards week after week.

Maryland quarterback Scott Zolak completed 29 of 45 passes for 264 yards, but he threw three interceptions.

Michigan’s Elvis Grbac completed 15 of 25 for 172 and two touchdowns, with one interception.

Vaughn scored on runs of 21 and two yards, Grbac had a 37-yard touchdown toss to Desmond Howard and a three-yarder to Jarrod Bunch, Martin Davis scored on a 27-yard interception return and Ken Sollom and Kevin Owen teamed up on a 37-yard touchdown pass play.

“Michigan is just a great football team,” Maryland Coach Joe Krivak said. “They’ve got so many weapons. They just simply wear you down. I think Michigan is one of the top four or five teams in the nation.

“Our goal was to play good sound defense,” Krivak said. “We wanted to contain Vaughn on the first down and put them in a second-and-long situation, which we did well.

“Every time a guy like Vaughn gets the ball, you hold your breath. And when we go against an offensive line like that for four quarters, it’s hard to hold on.”

Maryland’s Andre Vaughn scored on a two-yard run, Darren Colvin on a five-yard run, and Dan DeArmas kicked a 32-yard field goal.

Indiana 37, Eastern Michigan 6--Vaughn Dunbar ran for one touchdown and set up another with a 76-yard second-half kickoff return as the Hoosiers won a nonconference game at Bloomington, Ind.

The Hoosiers (3-0) allowed the Hurons (2-3) across midfield just twice through the first three quarters, but both of those drives ended in turnovers that led to other Indiana scores.

Eastern Michigan’s only touchdown came on a six-yard pass from Scott Hormann to Todd Bell with less than eight minutes left.
