Share

An unidentified man remained hospitalized Monday after being plucked from the ocean off Doheny State Beach and revived by paramedics.

Harbor Patrol deputies rescued the man on Sunday and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation for several minutes until he responded. The Latino man, who is in his late teens or early 20s, is in critical but stable condition in Samaritan Medical Center of San Clemente, hospital officials said.

“He’s conscious, but we haven’t been able to communicate with him,” said Lynne Wilson, director of public relations for the hospital. “We don’t know who he is yet.”

Deputies Randy Ploessel and Jim Lund were patrolling the waters off the state beach when they heard the shouts of several people who were pointing nearby, Sheriff’s Lt. Richard J. Olson said.

The deputies saw a man disappear under the water about 500 feet from the shore, then bob to the surface when their boat approached the area.
