Johnson’s Four Scoring Passes Pace El Toro

Rob Johnson led No. 1-ranked El Toro High School to a 45-16 victory over Antelope Valley Friday night at May’s Field in Lancaster.

Johnson had 17 completions in 25 attempts for 197 yards and four touchdowns.

Freddy Edwards scored the game’s first touchdown on an 87-yard run that gave Antelope Valley (1-4) a 6-0 lead at 11:19 of the first quarter.

El Toro (5-0) scored its first touchdown on an 11-yard pass from Johnson to Brian Haas 2:19 later, and Brad Hulse’s extra point gave El Toro the lead for good.

Bret Sanders scored on a one-yard run to increase El Toro’s lead to 14-6 at 11:26 of the second quarter, completing a 16-play drive.

Midway through the second period, Johnson threw the first of two second-quarter touchdown passes, hitting David Canfield for a 10-yard score. Johnson then threw 30 yards to Wade Jackson, his first of two touchdown receptions for the game.

Johnson hooked up with Jackson at 9:30 of the third period for a 28-yard scoring pass and the Chargers led, 35-6.

Antelope Valley scored in the third period on a 34-yard run by Chelsa Blanks, but El Toro came back with Hulse’s 39-yard field goal, giving the Chargers a 38-13 lead.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Johnson left the game in favor of Pat Saver, who scored on a five-yard run for El Toro’s final touchdown.
