EAST ROUNDUP : Penn State Runs Over Temple, 48-10

Leroy Thompson and Gary Brown each rushed for more than 100 yards Saturday as Penn State beat Temple, 48-10, at State College, Pa.

It was the 16th consecutive victory for the Nittany Lions (2-2) over the intrastate-rival Owls (2-3) since they played to a tie in 1950.

Thompson rushed for 125 yards in 18 carries. Brown gained 105 yards in 16 carries and also returned the opening kickoff 82 yards to set up Penn State’s first touchdown, a one-yard run by Sam Gash.

Penn State’s Tony Sacca completed nine of 16 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns. Sacca connected with Terry Smith on a 33-yard touchdown pass play in the first quarter and with Dave Daniels on a 26-yard play in the second quarter.

The Owls cut the lead to 28-7 near the end of the first half when James Harris blocked a Penn State punt, and Kevin Carey picked up the ball on the Penn State two-yard line and ran it in for Temple’s only touchdown.

Duke 17, Army 16--The Blue Devils (2-3), who had not scored a touchdown in 12 quarters, won at West Point, N.Y., when Randy Cuthbert ran the ball in from six-yards out with 2:48 left.

Duke (2-3) had not scored a touchdown on offense since its last drive against Northwestern in the second game of the season.

Willie McMillian of Army (2-1) rushed for 160 yards in 33 carries and scored on a two-yard run.

Army’s Mike Mayweather rushed for 117 yards in 25 carries, the 17th time in his career that he has gone over 100 yards rushing in a game.

Boston College 19, Rutgers 14--Ed Toner scored on a one-yard run with 19 seconds left at Newton, Mass., to lift the Eagles (2-2) over the Scarlet Knights (2-3).

Glenn Foley completed 17 of 33 passes for 241 yards and had six consecutive completions for 63 yards during the Eagles’ final 84-yard drive.

Cornell 20, Harvard 17--Mathew Hepher kicked a career-best 43-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to give Cornell (2-2) an Ivy League victory over the Crimson (2-2) at Cambridge, Mass.

John McNiff gained 189 yards in 22 carries and scored two touchdowns for Cornell.

Princeton 27, Brown 23--The Tigers overcame a 16-7 halftime deficit by scoring 20 points in the third quarter in an Ivy League game at Princeton, N.J.

Princeton, 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the league, was aided by five second-half turnovers by Brown (0-4, 0-2).

Brown quarterback Rich Willis completed 24 of 41 passes for 267 yards.

Colgate 30, Yale 7--Dave Goodwin completed 19 of 39 passes for 385 yards and three touchdowns at New Haven, Conn., as the Red Raiders (4-1) beat the Elis (2-2) for the first time since 1971 and won their third consecutive game against an Ivy League opponent.

It was the ninth consecutive game that Goodwin threw a touchdown pass, breaking the school record set by Steve Calabria in 1983.

Lafayette 41, Columbia 34--Lafayette tailback Tom Costello scored three touchdowns at New York as the Leopards (3-2) beat the Lions (0-4) for the 10th consecutive time.

Columbia had cut the deficit to 31-19 in the third quarter when quarterback Bruce Mayhew connected with Kevin Robinson and Solomon Johnson on touchdown pass plays of 65 and 59 yards.

Lehigh 22, Penn 16--Glenn Kempa connected with Rich Clark on a 38-yard touchdown pass with 17 seconds left at Philadelphia to give the Engineers (4-1) the win over the Quakers (1-3).

Kempa completed 20 of 47 passes for 359 yards and threw three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter.

Holy Cross 21, Dartmouth 10--Joe Segreti of Holy Cross (3-1-1) rushed for a career-high 239 yards in 35 carries in a nonconference win over the Big Green at Worcester, Mass.
