In accordance with routine procedure, three Oxnard police officers were removed from duty Sunday after they shot and killed a man who allegedly confronted them with a gun Saturday evening, department officials said.

Officers Ben Chavez, Richard Camacho and Steve Kawaguchi were placed on paid leave while the Ventura County district attorney’s office investigates the incident, said Oxnard Police Sgt. Jeff Young.

Meanwhile, the Ventura County coroner’s office completed an autopsy but was still unable to identify the dead man Sunday. Deputy Coroner Craig Stevens said the man died of multiple gunshot wounds, but declined to say how many gunshots or where he was hit.

“We have no idea at this point who this gentleman is,” Stevens said. “He had absolutely no papers on his person. We’ll run his prints through the California ID system and take it from there.”

The incident began about 6 p.m. Saturday when Rosa Lozano, 30, called police to report that a man with a gun was at her home in the 100 block of North Hayes Avenue in Oxnard’s La Colonia neighborhood.

As officers arrived, Lozano left the house from the back door, police said. The armed man came out the front door holding a gun and the officers fired several times.
