Regal Wonder won the $51,900 Valnor Handicap at Hawthorne Race Course Tuesday after 14 of the 18 horses entered overnight were scratched on the first day of the track’s 75-day meeting.

Originally slated at 7 1/2 furlongs over the turf course, the race for fillies and mares was shifted to the main course because of the soggy condition of the grass course. The distance was changed to one mile and 70 yards.

Racing over a sloppy track, Regal Wonder caught front-stepping Winona B. in mid-stretch and won by three lengths.

Winona B. finished second and Sweet Run, the 6-5 favorite, was a distant third. Princess Elaine, the only other starter, broke down on the backstretch.

Regal Wonder, a 6-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Royal and Regal, paid $6.20, $3.60 and $2.20 and was timed in 1:44 under Canadian jockey Sandy Hawley.

Winona B. paid $4.20 and $2.20, while show price on Sweet Run was $2.10.

The winner, owned by Ernest Samuel of Toronto, Canada, earned $31,529.
