Gwynn: No Requests Involving Trade, Clark
Tony Gwynn said Wednesday that he neither requested a trade nor said he would not play on the same team as Jack Clark in a meeting last week with Joe McIlvaine, the Padres’ new general manager.
Gwynn would not elaborate but said the meeting with McIlvaine went well.
“He seems like an honest guy,” Gwynn said.
Gwynn’s situation in the Padre clubhouse deteriorated steadily this season thanks in large part to comments from Clark, who has accused Gwynn of being a selfish player. Gwynn would not comment on that situation Wednesday.
“I’m laying low in town,” said Gwynn, whose season ended early when he fractured his finger Sept. 15. “Everybody knows where I’m coming from and everybody knows where Jack is coming from. I’m not going to sit here and bicker. Everybody is waiting to see what changes will be made, who will be around. I’m waiting, too.
“The season is over. There’s no use for me to sit here and recount everything. . . . I’m a little fed up with the way the season went from beginning to end.”
Gwynn is so frustrated, in fact, that he said he has watched very little of the NL Championship Series between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. He spent all day Wednesday fishing with his agent, John Boggs, and teammate Jerald Clark.
