Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl had to go to tiebreakers to win their second-round matches in the $1-million Seiko event at Tokyo.
Becker beat qualifier Ryuso Tsujino of Japan, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), despite Tsujino’s nine aces. Lendl defeated Mark Woodforde of Australia, 6-2, 7-6 (11-9).
The only time Becker broke Tsujino’s serve was the first game. Top-seeded Stefan Edberg swept, Todd Woodbridge, 6-3, 6-1.
