COLLEGE FOOTBALL REPORT / WEEKDAY UPDATE : AROUND THE NATION : Sun Devils’ Collins Out for Season
Arizona State junior defensive tackle Shane Collins, who reinjured his right knee in last week’s game against Washington, will undergo reconstructive surgery Saturday and miss the rest of the football season.
Collins originally suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during the Sun Devils’ Sept. 8 season opener against Baylor. He was scheduled to undergo reconstructive surgery, but it was postponed because of inflammation in the knee.
When the inflammation subsided, however, Collins said his knee felt good and donned a large brace and resumed practicing with the team late last month. He played 15 plays in last Saturday’s 42-14 loss to Washington and was carried off the field in the third quarter with a twisted knee.
Collins is expected to be sidelined at least eight months after the surgery and probably will not be able to defend his NCAA title in the shot put for the Sun Devil track team this spring.
