Taft 28, Cleveland 13--Taft overcame the loss of starting quarterback Jesse Menchaca as running back Darnell Hendricks ran for 79 yards and one touchdown to defeat Cleveland at home.
Menchaca, who completed three of three passes for 79 yards and ran for two touchdowns, suffered an ankle injury just before halftime and may be lost for the season.
With Taft (3-1, 2-0) leading, 13-7, in the second quarter, Menchaca was holding for Carlos Mansilla on an extra-point attempt after Menchaca’s second touchdown. Cleveland cornerback Todd Love blocked the kick but crashed into Menchaca, who was helped from the field.
Cleveland (0-3-1, 0-2) also lost its starting quarterback when David Erhardt left the game with an injured right shoulder. He led the Cavaliers to a touchdown on their first possession.
Late in the fourth quarter with Taft leading, 21-13, backup quarterback Karlon Mack connected with Ruben Benitez on a 30-yard touchdown pass, Mack’s only completion of the game.
