HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Corby Smith Leads Loyola to Victory

Senior quarterback Corby Smith passed for one touchdown and ran for another to lead Loyola to a 38-7 nonleague victory over Central of El Centro Saturday night at Glendale High.

Smith, son of USC Coach Larry Smith, connected with Mark Hughes for a two-yard score and then followed that with a two-yard touchdown run to help the Cubs take a 35-0 halftime lead.

With standout running back Alex Yeboah out with an injury, Loyola relied on juniors Matt Vanis and Michael Brown to rush for 227 yards. Vanis finished with 70 yards in 10 carries and one touchdown, and Brown gained 56 yards in sixcarries with one score.

Loyola, which opens Angelus League play Thursday against Santa Ana Mater Dei, is 6-0. Central, which is in the Desert Valleys League and was ranked third in the Southern Section’s Division V poll last week, is 5-1.

Mission Viejo 32, San Clemente 17--The Diablos started slowly but rallied in the second half to defeat the Tritons in a South Coast League opener at Mission Viejo High.

San Clemente rushed for 118 yards in taking a 10-3 first half lead, but Mission Viejo came back in the second half on two touchdown passes by quarterback Tim Snowden and 105 yards rushing by Marcellus Chrishon.

San Clemente, 4-2 overall and 0-1 in league play, hasn’t won a league game in three years and has a five-year record of 2-25 in the South Coast League. Mission Viejo is 5-1 and 1-0.

Muir 35, Crescenta Valley 0--Quarterback Sedrick Thomas threw two touchdown passes and scored on a 35-yard run in the fourth quarter to lead the Mustangs in their Pacific League opener at La Canada High.

Muir (4-2) scored a touchdown in each of the first three quarters before scoring twice in the final period, one touchdown coming on a 66-yard run by Saladin McCullough.
