Carson City, ridden by Jerry Bailey, led all the way and set a stakes record in winning the $114,000 Boojum Stakes for 3-year-olds and up at Belmont Park.

Carson City’s time of 1:08 for six furlongs on the fast track was one-fifth of a second faster than the previous record for the Grade III stakes set last year by Mr. Nickerson, this year’s runner-up. It was one-fifth of a second off the track record set by Groovy in 1987.

It was the fourth victory in nine starts for Carson City, a 3-year-old son of Mr. Prospector-Blushing Promise who earned $68,400 and returned $17.20, $6.80 and $6.20. Mr. Nickerson paid $5.40 and $4 and Once Wild returned $6.20.
