ROUNDUP : Garcia, Aguirre Lead Glendale to WSC Win

Hugo Allan Garcia of Glendale College won his sixth cross-country race in seven outings this season, but it was the runner-up finish of teammate Obed Aguirre that lifted the Vaqueros to victory in the second Western State Conference meet at Hart Park in Bakersfield on Friday.

Garcia, fresh off a victory in the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational last week, paced Aguirre for most of the four-mile race before pulling away at the end to win in 19 minutes 6 seconds. Aguirre finished in 19:12.

Glendale, which won the first WSC meet last month, placed five runners in the top 10 to defeat runner-up Bakersfield, 30-37.

Moorpark won the women’s race, scoring 30 points to runner-up Valley’s 83.

The Raiders were paced by Tricia Mathiesen, who finished second in 18:06 over the 5,000-meter course, and Leticia Melgoza, who placed fourth in 18:16.

Maria Paramo of Oxnard ran 17:44 to easily win the individual title. Glendale’s Nicole Jimenez was third in 18:07.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pierce d. Moorpark, 15-3, 15-3, 15-9--Christa Grenat and Danielle Larson each had seven kills for Moorpark (4-8) in a Western State Conference match at Moorpark. Pierce is 12-0 in conference play.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Crespi 6, Harvard 4--Crespi pulled into a tie with Harvard for first place in the San Fernando League with a home victory.

Crespi (18-2) and Harvard (16-6) are both 4-1 in league play.

Paul Suppa had three goals for Crespi and Jim Toring scored all four Harvard goals.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Azusa Pacific 3, Cal Lutheran 1 (OT)--High-scoring Rachel Wackerman struck again for Cal Lutheran, notching her 26th goal of the season, but the Regals gave up a goal in each of two 15-minute overtime periods and lost the District 3 match at home.

MEN’S SOCCER

Moorpark 7, Mission 1--Shaun Christensen scored twice for Moorpark (11-0, 6-0) in a WSC match.
