A Costa Mesa police officer suffered minor injuries when his patrol car was rammed by an alleged drunk driver Friday afternoon.

California Highway Patrol officials said Officer Harlan L. Pauley was turning left onto Newport Boulevard from Del Mar Avenue about 4 p.m. when a 1982 Chevrolet pickup ran a red light and collided with the patrol car.

CHP officials said the driver of the pickup, Alfredo G. Torres, 48, of Santa Ana, was taken to UCI Medical Center after suffering what authorities described as major injuries. He was in undetermined condition Saturday.
