The Washington Redskins did not play better than the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday. They just played less poorly.

The Redskins survived a battle of missed field goals and contained quarterback Randall Cunningham to escape with a 13-7 victory.

The win, Washington’s eighth in 10 games against the Eagles, came one week after the Redskins’ 24-20 loss to the unbeaten New York Giants.

“You look at last week and we played pretty well but lost,” said Redskin quarterback Stan Humphries, who completed 14 of 31 passes for 200 yards against the Eagles. “We may have looked bad today, but we won and that’s all that matters.”

Humphries’ passes of 33 yards to Gary Clark and 44 yards to Art Monk set up the Redskins’ only touchdown--a one-yard run by Gerald Riggs in the second quarter.

Redskin kicker Chip Lohmiller missed four consecutive field-goal attempts before converting kicks of 33 and 39 yards in the fourth quarter. Lohmiller has kicked field goals in 26 consecutive games, five shy of the NFL record set by Fred Cox of the Minnesota Vikings from 1968-70.

Philadelphia kicker Roger Ruzek missed two field-goal attempts as the Eagles (2-4) were limited to 270 yards of total offense--87 below their average.

Cunningham completed 21 of 42 passes for 220 yards, but 82 of the yards came during a drive that he capped with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Fred Barnett with 43 seconds left. The points were Philadelphia’s first in eight quarters against the Redskins.

The loss dropped the Eagles two games behind second-place Washington in the NFC East and gave them an 0-3 record within the division.

“Yeah, we’re worried,” tight end Keith Jackson said. “We’re definitely worried now. But I think this is a good team. We’ve got to start handling our own destiny.”

The Redskins (4-2) weren’t much more effective than the Eagles. Four drives ended with Lohmiller missing field-goal attempts of 51, 48, 41 and 50 yards before he finally converted twice for a 13-0 lead.

The Redskins’ lone touchdown drive began at their own 20 after Ruzek missed a 28-yard field goal attempt.

Humphries connected with Clark over the middle for 33 yards on third and eight and, one play later, Monk caught a long pass before going out of bounds at the Eagles’ one.

Riggs ran the ball in to give the Redskins a 7-0 lead.

Cunningham led one long drive in the first half, taking the Eagles from their one to the Washington 11 in 16 plays. But two passes into the end zone fell incomplete and Ruzek missed his first field goal.
