Fielder and Sandberg Lead AP All-Star Team
Cecil Fielder, the first major league player in 13 years to hit 50 or more home runs in a season, and Ryne Sandberg, only the third second baseman ever to hit 40 or more, lead a power-laden 1990 Associated Press baseball all-star team.
The 12-man team, selected in a nationwide poll of sportswriters and broadcasters and based only on regular-season performances, has six National League players and six American League players.
Three teams were represented by two players each--Pittsburgh Pirate outfielders Barry Bonds and Bobby Bonilla; Chicago White Sox catcher Carlton Fisk and relief pitcher Bobby Thigpen; and Oakland Athletic outfielder Rickey Henderson and right-handed pitcher Bob Welch.
Sandberg and Milwaukee Brewer designated hitter Dave Parker were the only repeaters from last year.
Completing the team are the San Francisco Giants’ Matt Williams at third base, the Cincinnati Reds’ Barry Larkin at shortstop and the New York Mets’ Frank Viola as the left-handed pitcher.
