A La Mesa man accused of leading a massive marijuana smuggling and distribution ring recently was arrested as part of a nationwide sweep of drug fugitives.

Gerald Lee Carroll was on the U.S. Marshals Service “15 Most Wanted” list since a 1986 federal indictment charged him with leading the drug ring. Carroll was traced to La Mesa and recently arrested at his home there without incident. Agents seized nearly $300,000 in cash, drugs and other assets.

Three other fugitives arrested by San Diego authorities were charged with murder while 16 drug fugitives had been at large for more than three years.
