New Roofs Must Be Fire-Resistant
Beginning Nov. 9, all construction in Palos Verdes Estates involving new or replacement roofs must use fire-resistant roofing materials, according to an ordinance passed unanimously by the City Council this month.
The measure, heavily favored by council members, is a culmination of years of discussion concerning the increasing of fires in Southern California, city officials said.
The ordinance requires that new roof work employ materials such as clay tiles, concrete tiles, slate shingles or other approved synthetic roof tiles. Wood shakes or shingles may also be used if they have been chemically treated and have either sheet rock or board sheeting underneath them.
The ordinance would allow existing roofs that need fixing to use their present material if the replacement does not exceed 25% of the roof.
