PREP ROUNDUP : El Modena Boys Win Cross-Country Title

In a close race that determined the Century League boys’ cross-country dual meet title, El Modena High School defeated Santa Ana Valley, 27-28, Thursday at Irvine Park.

El Modena’s Brent Austin won the three-mile race in 15 minutes 10 seconds, leading 10 runners who finished in less than 16 minutes. Juan Arvivu of Santa Ana Valley was second in 15:13; Mike Terry of El Modena was third in 15:15, and Peter Reyes of Santa Ana Valley finished fourth in 15:17.

It was the first league loss this season for Santa Ana Valley. El Modena is 5-0.

In other Century League boys’ cross-country:

Villa Park 17, Canyon 44--Danny Simon and Rob Fisher tied for first (16:21) to lead Villa Park (3-2) at Eisenhower Park in Orange. Greg DeClark (16:38) was third for Villa Park.

In Century League girls’ cross-country:

El Modena 21, Santa Ana Valley 39--Natalie Austin and Kristina Dahlberg finished in a tie for first in 19:06 for El Modena (3-2).

In Angelus League boys’ cross-country :

Santa Margarita 15, Servite 50--Mike Mazza (17:02) was first for host Santa Margarita (2-3). Ryan Barentine (17:17), Morgan Moody (17:35), Chuck Olson (17:53) and Matt Huss (18:01) finished second through fifth for Santa Margarita.

In Angelus League girls’ cross-country:

Santa Margarita 15, Rosary 49--Kristen Matheson was first (19:55) for host Santa Margarita (4-0).

In Empire League boys’ cross-country:

Katella 16, El Dorado 37--Mike Love (15:45), Mike Moreno (16:06) and Danny Moreno (16:18) swept the top three spots and Javier Langarica (16:54) finished fifth for Katella (5-0) in a double-dual meet at Tri-City Park in Placentia. Shawn Cummins of El Dorado (16:29) finished fourth, and El Dorado defeated Cypress, 16-47. Katella defeated Cypress, 15-40.

In Empire League girls’ cross-country:

Katella 23, El Dorado 34--Martha Pinto (18:54) and Denia Quinonez (21:55) finished first and second, respectively, for Katella (4-1) in a double-dual meet, in which Katella also defeated Cypress, 25-30, and El Dorado beat Cypress, 27-28. Jennifer Selzer (22:01) finished third and Sarah Valdez (22:10) fourth for El Dorado. Joanne Cox (22:44) finished fifth for Cypress.

In Freeway League boys’ cross-country:

Fullerton 18, Buena Park 42--Israel Navarro (17:57) was first for host Fullerton (3-2). Peter Skuben (18:19) and Charles Johnson (18:25) were second and third for Fullerton.

Sunny Hills 18, Sonora 47--Mike Berity and Jim Castro ran 16:31 and tied for first for host Sunny Hills (4-1).

In Freeway League girls’ cross-country:

Fullerton 19, Buena Park 41--Gisela Lopez (22:02) was first and Adrienne Amsberry (22:50) second for host Fullerton.

Sonora 20, Sunny Hills 38--Banford Trashawn (21:05) and Jody Pfister (21:19) finished first and second, respectively, for visiting Sonora. Suzanne Freed (21:52) was third for Sunny Hills.

In Orange League boys’ cross-country:

Savanna 22, Magnolia 36--Ray Estrada (15:45) won for visiting Savanna (4-1). Dennis O’Neal (17:12) was third for Magnolia (2-3).

In Pacific Coast League boys’ cross-country:

Laguna Beach 22, Century 33--David Brobeck was first in 15:53 and Jon Hahn was second in 16:49 for Laguna Beach (2-3) at Laguna Niguel Regional Park.

In Pacific Coast League girls’ cross-country:

Laguna Beach 24, Century 31--Century’s Corina Segovia won in 20:20 and Kendra Carter of Laguna Beach (2-3) was second in 20:48.

Laguna Hills 24, Estancia 37--Estancia’s Carrie Appell won in 20:13, but Laguna Hills’ team won at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa.

In Sea View League boys’ cross-country:

Woodbridge 25, Corona del Mar 30--Jack Hogan (15:48) and Michael Marumoto (16:02) finished first and second, respectively, for Corona del Mar, but Woodbridge took the next five places and won the battle for second place in the dual-meet season. David Blum (16:14), Matt Taylor (16:14) and Dan Kroger (16:16) led host Woodbridge (4-1). Corona del Mar is 3-2.

University 27, Tustin 28--David Chia (15:44) of University was first, Paul Stamat (15:51) of Tustin was second and Ryan Ackerman (15:58) of Tustin was third at Mason Park in Irvine. Tustin and University each finished 1-4 and tied for fourth in the league.

Saddleback 15, Newport Harbor 49--Eddie Salinas (15:04) led a Saddleback sweep of the first six places as the Roadrunners finished undefeated in their league dual-meet schedule. Dylan Gugganmos (16:19) was seventh for Newport Harbor at Bonita Creek Park in Newport Beach.

In Sea View League girls’ cross-country:

Tustin 20, University 39--Tustin won the league title by going 5-0 in league. The Tillers had six girls under the 20-minute mark; however, University’s Tanya Brix (17:57) was first. Liza Alexander (18:21) was second, Leila Durr (19:09) third, Jaimi Bickley (19:17) fourth, Nikki Manning (19:43) fifth and Susan Nitao (19:50) sixth for Tustin.

Newport Harbor 15, Saddleback 50--Liz Hoffner, Eva Mattson and Brittany Leslie finished in a three-way tie for first in 19:54, and Newport Harbor (3-2) swept the first seven spots.

Woodbridge 26, Corona del Mar 29--Kay Nekota finished first in 17:44 and Kim Tardif was second in 19:06 for Woodbridge (4-1), followed by Corona del Mar’s Kristen McFarland (19:21), Woodbridge’s Amy Robles (19:47) and Corona del Mar’s Kristen Shryock (19:48).

In Sunset League girls’ cross-country:

Edison 15, Marina 50--Shelley Taylor (18:52) led host Edison (6-0).

In Angelus League tennis:

Mater Dei 11, Santa Margarita 7--Erika Asmuss swept her singles sets for host Mater Dei (8-4, 4-2 in the league).

In Empire League girls’ tennis:

Los Alamitos 15, Cypress 3--Laura Brun swept, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0, to lead Los Alamitos (15-2, 10-0), which won the league title.

In Orange League tennis:

Valencia 15, Brea-Olinda 3--Valencia (14-6, 10-0) won the Orange League title and was led by Cyndi Nguyen and Judy Hlavac, who swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2, to go undefeated in the league. Lisa Kim and Fennis Ho won, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3, for visiting Valencia. Brea-Olinda finished 8-2 in league.

In Sea View League tennis:

Saddleback 9, Newport Harbor 9 (Saddleback wins in tiebreakers, 10-8)--The Roadrunners (9-5, 3-5) won all nine doubles tiebreakers and one in singles for the victory. The doubles team of Thanh Phung and Huong Quach swept its doubles sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, in regulation play. Newport Harbor is 11-7 and 3-5.

Corona del Mar 13, Tustin 5--Sara Cicerone swept, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2, to lead visiting Corona del Mar (16-2, 8-0).

University 10, Woodbridge 8--Jeannette Fylpaa won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, and Christian Pham won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for visiting University (13-4, 7-1).

In Sunset League tennis:

Fountain Valley 16, Santa Ana 2--Michelle Berkowitz (6-0, 6-0, 6-0) and Renee Urricariet (6-0, 6-0, 6-1) each remained undefeated in league singles play for host Fountain Valley (13-5, 11-0).

Huntington Beach 16, Westminster 2--Serena Sihota and Madhu Subherwal won their doubles sets, 6-4, 6-0, 6-2, for Huntington Beach (11-4, 7-4).

In South Coast League water polo:

Capistrano Valley 14, Irvine 3--Kevin Eggert had five goals, Jeremt Braxton-Brown added three and Nick Kittredge had nine saves for Capistrano Valley (20-3, 3-1) at Irvine. John Goddard had eight saves for Irvine (12-10, 1-3).
