Two San Diego players won first round matches Thursday at the Riviera Women’s All-American Tennis Championships at Riviera Country Club, one of four tournaments composing the Collegiate Grand Slam.

Giovanna Carotenuto of U.S. International defeated Nathalie Rodriguez of South Carolina, 6-3, 6-2, while Sakolwan Kacharoen of the USD defeated Deborah Edelman of Indiana, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Tonya Fuller of USD lost to Caryn Moss of Georgia 7-6, (7-2) 2-6, 7-6 (7-4).

WOMEN’S GOLF

USIU’s Kim Millies was tied for third after shooting a one-under-par 72 and USIU was 11th out of 18 teams after the first round of the Stanford Women’s Intercollegiate tournament at Stanford University Golf Course in Palo Alto. Millies birdied the final three holes. Arizona shot 293 to capture the first-round team lead.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Point Loma Nazarene is ranked seventh and Christian Heritage 10th in the NAIA District 3 preseason poll. Westmont of Santa Barbara is ranked first. Christian Heritage, coached by former NBA center Swen Nater, was 33-6 and the NCCAA national champion in 1989, but has lost four starters.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Gonzaga outlasted USD, 15-17, 16-14, 7-15, 15-2, 15-5, after the Toreros relinquished a 14-6 lead in the second game in a WCC match played at USD. Gonzaga improved to 18-5, 8-1 in the WCC. USD, led by Nikki Wallace’s 20 kills, fell to 10-13, 2-5.

Christian Heritage fell to The Master’s, 15-3, 15-8, 15-7 in a nonconference game played in Newhall. Master’s improved to 7-12 while Christian Heritage fell to 6-3. The two will play again Saturday.
