Andy Morrone scored with five minutes remaining in the game to give San Diego State a 1-0 victory over visiting St. Mary’s. The Aztecs improved to 10-6-2.
WATER POLO
Second-ranked Stanford defeated host UC San Diego, 11-7, in a nonconference game at Canyonview Pool. The Tritons fell to 4-19; Stanford improved to 18-3.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
UCSD (30-7) won two matches at the Occidental Women’s Tournament, defeating Occidental, 15-9, 15-8, 15-7, and Colorado College, 15-2, 15-4, 16-14.
Elizabeth Tan led UCSD in the first match with 12 kills. Vikki Van Duyne added 10. Liz Vesanovic led UCSD in the second match with 10 kills.
PLNC lost its first Golden State Athletic Conference game at Azusa Pacific, 0-15, 15-12, 15-6, 15-5. Roberta and Debbie Simpson led PLNC (21-7, 10-1) with 10 kills. Azusa Pacific fell to 24-11, 7-4..
WOMEN’S GOLF
Kim Millies of USIU was the area’s top finisher after two rounds of the Stanford Women’s Intercollegiate at Stanford Golf Course. Millies shot a combined 148 on the par 73, 6,190 yard course and is tied for seventh. At 142, Arizona’s Annika Sorenstam and San Jose’s Pat Hurst are tied for first. San Jose State is in first with 590 points; USIU (634) is in 14th.
BIATHLON
The Coors Light Biathlon Series on Sunday will make its 14th stop of the season at Poway’s Sabre Springs Business Park beginning at 7:30.
This is the second-to-last event of the year and will consist of a five-kilometer run, a 30-kilometer bike ride and a second five-kilometer run.
Elite biathletes accumulate points for their top 10 finishes of the year.
The points leaders thus far in the 15-city tour are: Brent Steiner of Tempe, Ariz. (352), Joel Thompson of Encinitas (350) and Fred Klevan of Newtown Square, Pa. (222). The women are led by: Liz Downing of Portland, Ore. (500), Donna Landreville of Seattle (396) and Melissa Mantak of Boulder (298).
