Trabuco Hills High School combined a power running game with big plays to beat Estancia, 35-7, in Pacific Coast League football Friday night at Davidson Field.

Late in the first quarter, a 63-yard touchdown run off left tackle by Trabuco Hills running back Jeff Clayton and Jason Teno’s conversion gave the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.

Estancia (2-6, 1-2 in league) responded with its only big play of the night when quarterback Matt Johner, who completed 13 of 22 passes for 201 yards, found Will Bohuslavizki on a crossing pattern for a 57-yard touchdown to start the second quarter.

Trabuco Hills (3-4-1, 2-1) scored on a one-yard run from Ben Rooker, his first of two touchdowns, and the Mustangs pushed the lead to 20-7 in the second quarter when cornerback Gibson Gomez intercepted a Johner pass and returned it 66 yards for a touchdown.

“I wish our defense had been making big plays like that all year,” Trabuco Hills Coach Jim Barnett said. “Last week, when we lost, 17-14, to Laguna Hills, Laguna had no turnovers, and their time of possession doubled ours.”

Trabuco Hills put itself back in the race for a Southern Section playoff bid with a ground game that gained 174 yards and a stingy defense that had two interceptions and five sacks.

Defensive lineman John Pugh led the pass rush with four sacks.
