Brian Madlangbayan scored five touchdowns Saturday, including the game-winner in overtime, to lift Occidental College to a 47-41 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Claremont-Mudd at Patterson Field.
Madlangbayan, a freshman running back, scored from one yard to cap Occidental’s second tiebreaker possession. With the win, Occidental improved to 5-2 overall, 3 1/2-0 in conference play. Claremont-Mudd is 1-6, 1 1/2-3.
Occidental, starting at its opponent’s 25-yard line in accordance with SCIAC tiebreaker rules, scored on its first possession when quarterback Scott Thompson hit Rob Leinbach with a 12-yard scoring pass.
Claremont-Mudd also scored on a 12-yard pass on its first possession, but the Stags’ Brandon Lee missed on a 39-yard field goal attempt on Claremont-Mudd’s second--and ensuing--possession in overtime, setting the stage for Madlangbayan’s winning run.
Occidental ran nine plays in its two overtime possessions, with Madlangbayan carrying the ball eight times. Madlangbayan finished with 181 rushing yards in 35 carries and also scored on runs of 24, nine and three yards. In addition, he had a 76-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the second quarter.
Lee forced the game into overtime with a 43-yard field goal on the final play of regulation. That kick tied the score, 34-34.
Occidental held a 21-17 lead at the half and extended it to 34-24 after three quarters. Claremont-Mudd roared back to tie the score on Schon Branum’s four-yard run and Lee’s field goal.
