Landry Scores Two Touchdowns to Lead Savanna

Leon Landry scored two touchdowns in Savanna High School’s 21-10 victory over Western Thursday at Western High.

Landry scored on a 70-yard run on the game’s second play from scrimmage. He also scored from the one-yard line with six seconds left in the third quarter to ensure the victory for Savanna (5-2-2, 2-1-1 in league). Landry also gained 117 of Savanna’s 275 rushing yards.

The loss virtually eliminates Western (4-3-2, 1-2-1) from post-season play.

Savanna dominated the first half and took a 14-0 lead on Brook Bell’s two-yard run with 5 minutes 31 seconds left in the first quarter. The Rebels held Western to 32 yards rushing in nine carries and 71 yards passing in the first half. Gilbert Brito was intercepted three times in the first half, twice by Hien Nguyen.

Brito scored Western’s only touchdown on a nine-yard run in the final 1:46 of the second quarter.

At the start of the third quarter, Western returned the kick to the Savanna 46, then Brito ran the ball to the Savanna 12 on first down. Shane Foss fumbled the ball at the three on the next play and Savanna’s Marty Garcia recovered the ball at the 10 to stop the drive.
