In four eight-man football games, La Jolla Country Day High School had yet to play a second half this season because of the league’s 45-point “mercy” rule. Friday in La Jolla, the Torres didn’t even get to the second quarter.

LJCD defeated Borrego Springs, 50-0. By mutual consent of both coaches, the game was called at the end of the first quarter. LJCD had run only six offensive plays, three of them went for touchdowns.

“It was just one of those things where everything happened so quickly,” LJCD Coach Rick Woods said. “When we looked up at the end of the quarter, there were 50 points on the board.”

Junior Rashaan Salaam, who gained 74 yards in two carries, both touchdowns, broke the San Diego Section record for rushing touchdowns in a season (37). Rancho Buena Vista’s Scott Garcia had 36 in 1988. Salaam also scored on a 57-yard punt return, adding to his section record for points in a season (244).

On the other scores, Jim Bradbury had a touchdown run of 32 yards, Darren Hamilton recovered a blocked punt in the end zone, Todd Graves and Chris Boyle returned interceptions and Chris Grasso tackled Borrego’s quarterback in the end zone for a safety. Eric Abrams was six for seven on extra-point attempts. LJCD, which has also won five 11-man games this season, improved to 9-0, 5-0. Borrego fell to 2-6, 1-5.
